cbd for anxietyThere are many reasons people are adding cannabidiol to their supplement arsenal, but some people are even suggesting that it may be useful for treating one of the biggest mental health issues of our time. People all around the globe are using CBD for anxiety with positive results, and some people have even been able to use it toreplace their regular anxiety medications. Despite speculation thatTHC-heavy cannabis might induce anxiety in some people, CBD seems to show opposite effects.
There’s still much more research to be done, but experts have uncovered a bit about why cannabidiol may have this effect on those suffering from anxiety. The answer lies partly in how CBD impacts the body and the brain, through theEndocannabinoid System. The ECS produces endocannabinoids or the bodily neurotransmitters that are structurally similar to the phytocannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.

The endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol, or 2-AG, is structurally similar to the CBD molecule. This neurotransmitter is partly responsible for regulating multiple functions, like mood, memory, pain sensation, appetite, and more. When CBD binds with CB-2 receptors throughout all of the major organs, it may have an impact on these functions as well.

Its impact on the brain and mood regulation gives a bit of insight into how cannabidiol may have a positive result on anxiety levels. Of course, in order to label CBD as a treatment for anxiety, experts needed to look deeper. Despite regulations and restrictions, multiple studies have been published that explain cannabidiol’s potential as an anxiety treatment.

Scientific Studies on CBD for Anxiety

Its impacts on the brain led researchers to dig a bit deeper, looking into how cannabidiol impact different types of anxiety disorders. Research shows that cannabidiol has an impact on5-HT1A receptors, the neuroreceptors frequently targeted by anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medications.

One study looked at using CBD for generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD) measured regional cerebral blood flow in subjects after the distribution of either a 400 mg dose of CBD of a placebo. The study found that CBD was related to a significant decrease in subjective anxiety in comparison to the placebo group each time.

Research also suggests that cannabidiol may be able to reduce cortisol levels, or stress, which may be a precursor to the onset of anxiety attacks or feelings of anxiety. One peer-reviewed publication accelerated the scenario and included theuse of CBD on chronically stressed mice. The evidence suggests that CBD effectively relieved stress by impacting neurogenesis, or the growth of new nervous tissue, in the hippocampus.

Despite the lack of understanding about CBD and its anxiolytic effects, many people have reaped great results when using it daily to treat anxiety disorders. Since the passing of the2018 farm bill, which granted easier access to hemp and CBD, researchers are expected to continue investigating the use of CBD for anxiety and related disorders.

By Lowering Anxiety, Cannabidiol May Impact Co-Occurring Disorders

Because cannabidiol may have a positive impact on anxiety levels, it may also help ease some of the co-occurring conditions that are commonly diagnosed alongside anxiety disorders. One case report followed the results of a young girl who suffered from insomnia as a result of post-traumatic stress disorder. The study suggested that cannabidiol was useful in her case for relieving anxiety, and even help reduce symptoms and discomfort related to insomnia.

cannabidiol for anxietyStudies show that cannabidiol is a wake-promoting agent that might help regulate sleep-wake cycles and promote focus after dosing. Combined with its positive impact on social anxiety and generalized anxiety disorder, as well as its ability to decrease stress levels, cannabidiol may be useful for anxiety related to a sports competition, academic performance, a work presentation, or related event.

Other conditions thatcommonly occur alongside anxiety disorders may be subject to improvement with regular CBD doses. Research suggests that cannabinoids may play a role in easing the symptoms ofIrritable Bowel Syndrome (including when induced by anxiety). CBD may also be useful in the treatment of anxiety-relatedeating disorders by reducing nausea and increasing appetite.

When Is CBD Appropriate for Anxiety?

The research is incomplete and there is much more to be learned about cannabidiol and its anxiolytic effects. However, studies have identified it as useful in a handful of scenarios and researchers believe that cannabidiol has greater potential than has been identified yet. One article published byThe American Society for Experimental NeuroTherapeutics states that cannabidiol may be effective when used acutely to treat many anxiety-related disorders, includinggeneralized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Because there is little regulation or research regarding CBD use, it is hard to say who may benefit from CBD. People of all ages, gender, and health background may benefit from cannabidiol. Seniors have found success using CBD to help with pain, and research has even identified manycannabinoids as useful in pediatric medicine. In some cases, cannabidiol may even be an appropriate replacement for regular medication.

Because CBD products and anxiety disorders are very diverse, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to using CBD for anxiety. If you think cannabidiol could be a good option for you, talk to your doctor. He or she will be able to help you decide if trying CBD is right for you and your anxiety-related symptoms. You should never discontinue or replace a prescription medication or alter your health routine without your doctor’s guidance.

CBD for Anxiety: Choosing the Best Product for You

cbd capsules for anxietyChoosing a CBD product for managing anxiety is dependent upon your unique biological factors and health profile, so it is best to include a doctor when designing a CBD regimen and making your final decision. There are a few products that might have unique benefit for those hoping to use CBD for anxiety, whether they prefer a once daily dose or need to dose throughout the day to manage chronic or fluctuating anxiety levels. Some of the most popular products include tinctures, edibles, and capsules.

  • Tinctures are frequently chosen for managing fluctuating anxiety levels because they take effect quickly and can be dosed in small amounts throughout the day as needed. The liquid dose is placed under the tongue where it is absorbed and can begin to take effect in as little as 10 minutes.

  • Edibles are useful for regular dosing and help mask the hemp flavor associated with tinctures. They take longer to kick in, up to an hour and a half after your first dose. This makes it hard to stack small doses or to vary your dose throughout the day and may be best for people who wish to take regularly. Pre-measured doses of cannabidiol once or twice daily.

  • Capsules are another great regular option for consistent dosing. They distribute a regular, pre-measured dose each time and take anywhere from 20-40 minutes to take effect. Capsules are often chosen by patients (with doctor’s guidance) to help phase out other medication because they naturally replace other pills without changing your dosing routine.

We are struggling to get CBD here in Canada. There is no issue buying THC products. I have a number of problems, the worse being Fibromyalgia and degenerative disc disease, along with severe Arthritis. I don’t want to be taking pharmasuiticals that have so many side effects. Thank you, in advance.
